Desert Lizards

One of our primary interests here at Selective Origins is in the adaptative biology of reptiles that inhabit extreme environments.  Two of the most highly specialized lizard species in the world are the American Chuckwallas and the African Uromastyx.  Both have developed fascinating physiological mechanisms for water conservation and thermal management.  For example, both species rarely drink water.  Uromastyx don't even really seem to understand what to do with water if it is presented to them.  Both animals extract the bulk of their water requirements via the long Henle loops of the kidneys.  The adaptations for desert life make the lizards exceptionally hardy in captivity and the diverse and beautiful coloration and patterns make them a great choice for captive breeding projects and showcase terrariums.

We work with a variety of Uromastyx species and several types of Chuckwallas, please browse this photo gallery and check the availability page for current offerings.
